GET OUT THOSE GREEN THUMBS
Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews, The Wrigley Association, and Wrigley is Going Green are opening a fresh, new community garden spanning two city lots at the site of a former drug house, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9am on Saturday, July 18 at 1950 Henderson Ave. A plant and bake sale will follow. The Wrigley Garden is a two-year project designed to positively change the lives of local residents by helping them grow their own food. Available to all Long Beach residents, it’s first come, first served with a sliding scale starting at $20 per year for Henderson Avenue residents. FOLLOW THE SUN
Southern California Edison (SCE) will help Long Beach residential customers “follow the sun” with a special free session on the California Solar Initiative (CSI) program and the incentives it offers to homeowners who decide to “go solar.” The session, co-hosted by the City of Long Beach, will be from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm on Thursday, July 23 at the Queen Mary Hotel aboard the Queen Mary, 1126 Queens Hwy. Customers will learn about solar energy basics, benefits of installing a solar energy system, tax credits and other financial models that can help reduce upfront costs, and financial incentives available through the CSI program. Long Beach Taxpayers’ Association will have its monthly meeting on Thursday, July 23 from 7pm to 9pm at Ecco’s Pizza, 2123 Bellflower Blvd. Krtistine Guerrero from the League of California Cities will be guest speaker. The League of California Cities advocates for sound legislative policy on behalf of California cities in both Sacramento and D.C. Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews has announced a community BBQ on Saturday, July 25 from 10am to 4pm at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 1950 Lemon Ave. The Long Beach Firefighters Local 372 will cook the free meal, WSS Shoes will host live music and entertainment, and the Weed and Seed program will serve free refreshments. Bring blankets, lawn chairs, or a special summer side dish to share and enjoy a game of cards, checkers, dominos, or horseshoes, while watching kids enjoy sack races and other fun outdoor activities.
