Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is offering a five-day summer Science at the Seashore workshop called “Crab Shells and Native Tales.” Designed for third- and fourth-grade students, the session will be offered from 9am to noon, Monday, August 17 through Friday, August 21.
Throughout the week, students will have an opportunity to observe animals in the aquarium, explore nearby coastal habitats, participate in ecological games and use a variety of scientific tools (microscopes, plankton nets, binoculars, etc.) to investigate live marine animals.
Students will have a chance to observe animal behavior as they dig for sand crabs, feed barnacles and more. They will discover the marvelous mud at the salt marsh and learn about cultural connections to the ocean, including native peoples’ use of ocean resources. Each participant will create take-home projects.
The cost is $85 ($77 for Friends member) and includes a “Science at the Seashore” T-shirt. Pre-registration is required, as class size is limited to ensure individual attention.
Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is located at 3720 Stephen M. White Drive in San Pedro and is a facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.
