The Scholarship Committee of Assistance League of Long Beach has awarded 42 scholarships to deserving students for the 2009 fall semester. Each student will receive between $500 to $2000 to help pay his or her school tuition.
Scholarships are awarded to students attending Long Beach City College (LBCC) and California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). In addition, music awards are given to Long Beach Unified School District’s music program.
Scholarships awarded to Long Beach City College are: eight in general education with a total of $4,800; three for the Hossom Smith for a total of $1,600; two for the Agnes Kuffel for $1,200; and one for the Beverly O’Neill scholarship of $1,500.
Scholarships at California State University Long Beach are as follows: nine in special education totaling $18,000; nine in general education totaling $18,000; and nine in the College of Education totaling another $18,000.
The total for both colleges is $63,100. A total of $22,000 was awarded to those students studying music in the Long Beach Unified School District. The total number of LBCC and CSULB recipients for 2009 to 2010 is 42.
According to Susie Young, scholarship chairman, a reception in October will recognize all recipients who qualify. “Sometimes problems arise and a student is unable to qualify at the last minute due to personal hardship or other reasons. This is one reason why the university is delaying their scholarship reception until October.” She also noted that there is a greater need for scholarship funds due to the economic climate and the rise in tuition costs.
