I love to watch old movies. One of my favorite themes is homefront happenings during war time. Some films that I have especially enjoyed are Gone With the Wind, Two Girls and a Sailor, On the Town and a couple of the Andy Hardy pictures starring Mickey Rooney.
Seems that “back then,” folks really rallied around the effort and worked hard to provide for the troops. They pitched in by cooperating with rationing and victory gardens as well as volunteering at USO locations.
Many of us want to do something to help our young women and men overseas during this time of war but don’t really know how or what to do. Well, here is an idea!my Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) chapter— Susan B. Anthony— is gathering small items to put together in kits to send to our soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. These are not expensive items— mostly things that most of us already have at home or can be picked up at a local drug store. If you’d like to get involved, read below for the list of items and feel free to drop the items by our office— we’ll make sure they get into the right hands.
Small, hotel-size shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, mending kits, etc.
Small packages of sunflower seeds or other snack foods
Pull-off top soups or pastas
Loofah sponges (apparently they hold up better than washcloths)
Tuna, salmon and chicken in packets with “no draining necessary”
SOFT toilet paper
Socks (for men and women)
Wipes
Telephone cards
Money donations are also welcome as each box costs about $11 to ship. Please make out checks to “Susan B. Anthony Chapter, NSDAR” and drop off or mail to the Signal Tribune (see address on this page).
Also needed are things to help our DAR members sew up fabric-type neck coolers to send to soldiers currently serving in Iraq. The ladies need cotton or cotton-blend fabric, 45″ wide in grey, sand, brown, tan or desert camouflage colors. No florals, prints or other colors can be used. They also need tan and/or grey thread and a product called Soilmoist (sold at Lowe’s).
Anything our readers can do to assist our DAR chapter with their “Project Patriot” is greatly appreciated. See the website for more details: http://www.californiadar.org/chapters/susanbanthony/sbaevents.html
