Art show to culminate five-week youth ambassador camp

The community is invited to support the local Youth Ambassadors program at a special event celebrating the arts on Friday, July 31 from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Expo Building, 4321 Atlantic Avenue, in Bixby Knolls. The arts celebration will feature artwork created by Andy Street and Grisham Youth Ambassadors of North Long Beach. This event culminates a five-week art camp created to expose youth to the various ways they can express themselves through the arts by offering instruction in photography, painting, video and sculpture.
Led by Dr. Carlos Silveri, professor, California State University, Long Beach, Department of Art, the Youth Ambassadors Art Camp is modeled after the pioneering approach to youth education authored by renowned educator and theorist Paulo Freire that seeks to foster a culture of peace and active citizenship among young people and help them to fulfill their potential by providing access to sports and artistic and cultural activities.
The arts celebration and art camp are made possible through the collaboration of California State University Long Beach, Department of Art; L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe, 4th District; The Long Beach Housing Development Company; Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association, and the Arts Council for Long Beach.
Initiated in 2007, the program develops at-risk youth to become youth ambassadors who carry out the role of representing their community with dignity, pride, and integrity, and to motivate other youth by their example.
