VIVA LONG BEACH!
On Friday, August 7, the Long Beach Police Historical Society (LBPHS) will host its third annual LBPHS Casino Night fundraiser at Skylinks Long Beach, 4800 E. Wardlow Rd., from 7pm to midnight. The LBPHS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, exhibiting and sharing the history of the Long Beach Police Department. Casino Night is the primary fundraiser, and funds raised from this event will assist the LBPHS in acquiring and preserving artifacts of the Department and ultimately to establish a Long Beach Police Museum. HEARING HELP
Guest speaker for the Thursday, August 13 Hearing Loss Association, Long Beach/Lakewood Chapter (HLA) meeting will be Amelita Mendoza, RNC, who will be speaking on the California Newborn Hearing Screening Program. Mendoza is the neonatal hearing specialist program coordinator for the Southern California Hearing Coordination Center at Miller Children’s Hospital. HLA is a support group offering education on coping skills and resources to help survive in a hearing world and meets at 6:30pm on the second Thursday of each month at the Weingart Senior Center, 5220 Oliva Avenue in Lakewood. Admission is free. Reservations not necessary.
POTLUCK PICNIC
The Iowa Association will be having its 109th Annual Iowa Picnic on Saturday, Aug. 15 from 9:30am to 2:30pm at Long Beach Lawn Bowling Facility, 1109 Federation Dr. at Recreation Park. On Tuesday, August 18 the St. Mary Medical Center Senior Health Program monthly series “Coffee Talk with the Doc” will focus on “Diabetes: The Sugar Disease” as part of its health and wellness programs. A NIGHT WITH THE KNIGHTS
