The first of 18 utility boxes in Bixby Knolls got a new look last weekend. Local artist John Culqui painted an homage to the legendary Welch’s Restaurant, a former Bixby Knolls hot spot, at the southwest corner of Atlantic. The Redevelopment Agency has hired Culqui to paint a number of utility boxes in the city, including central and west Long Beach. Culqui is working on other Bixby Knolls-specific concepts for both Atlantic Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard to including Rancho Los Cerritos, mid-century architecture and design, Town and Crest theaters, and other themes, to beautify the corridors.
