The property located at 1855 Coronado Avenue, which houses Kluger Architects, has been selected for the September 2009 Signal Hill Planning Commission Beautification Award. Built in 1990 as one of a number of homogenous concrete tilt-up office/warehouse buildings in the area, the owner has differentiated this structure by completely gutting the interior and arranging the space in an open floor plan reminiscent of a contemporary urban loft, with details such as exposed-wood rafters, concrete-steel railings and wood floors that successfully advertise the office’s architectural services.
The building’s exterior has been adorned with a three-color paint palette of white, mocha and red rectilinear shapes that help diffuse the building mass and add visual interest. The water-conserving landscaping complements the geometry and structure of the building and is highlighted by a line of crape myrtles planted in a field of white gravel base and an undulating fence fabricated with vertical steel posts. The entry sign is a simple rectangular monolith faced on two sides with one-inch square, black tiles and steel letters in relief.
