Long Beach Councilmember Gerrie Schipske pulled the skate park agenda item from the city council agenda last Tuesday because a number of 5th District Youth Council members were unavailable to attend because of the 4th of July holiday.
“The kids started the process together, and they deserve to finish the process together,” said Schipske. “We’ll bring the item back at a later date.”
Among Schipske’s suggestions are:
1. Do away with helmet and pad requirements and the $200 citations given for violations.
2. Improving the quality of signs to let skaters know they’re skating at their own risk.
3. Employing a full-time recreation leader to supervise and interact with the skaters
4. Establishing a public/private partnership with companies such as Coca-Cola to raise funds for park improvements.
5. Involving skaters in a park clean-up, and designating specific days and times for younger skaters.
6. Enhancing the design of the park to meet the concerns of skaters.
