Thoughts from the Publisher

After weeks of taking it easy after a six-week illness, I am now back to work full time. My first “all day” at the office was Tuesday. I drove myself to work in the morning and stayed at the office until 5pm. From there I scooted up to Bixby Knolls to meet with a prospective client for dinner at Café Bixby. During my meeting, a current customer brought me information for her newest ad, and one of our loyal readers stopped by the table to chat for a few minutes. I finished up at the restaurant and quickly high-tailed it to Signal Hill City Hall to attend the 7pm Council/Redevelopment Agency meeting. My day ended at about 8:30pm. Quite a full day for a first day back!
I know that most of our readers have similar days absolutely chock-full of work, chores, errands and obligations— especially at this time of the year. To make shopping, dining and doing a bit easier, we have a very nice holiday gift guide starting this issue. Filled with advertising for stores, restaurants and other service and retail establishments, our gift guide also features write-ups and photos to help our readers get better acquainted with some of our local businesses.
Keeping our dollars close to home is crucial during this economic downturn. We all need to support our community business owners if we want them to stay around. We have already lost so many small retailers because of shifting financial times, and we certainly don’t want to lose any more.
Remember Joe from Victor’s Fine Gifts and Steve from Paradise Bound? We sure miss them from the 3900 block of Atlantic Avenue. Well, here’s some good news about them. They are putting together a five-day sales event (Tuesday, Dec. 8— Saturday, Dec. 12) with their friends Christine Hart and Suzi Hoffman. Their “Super Christmas Sale” will take place at 3920 Atlantic Ave.— the former location of Victor’s and Paradise Bound. See their ad on page 7 for details. Stop by and buy, buy, buy!
And while you’re in the buying mood, do remember to spend your holiday dollars in Bixby Knolls, California Heights, Wrigley and Signal Hill. These retailers and restaurants depend on your patronage. They are your friends and neighbors!and in most cases offer superior customer service— much more personal attention to your needs than larger retailers and chain restaurants.

Happy shopping!
