Fifteen local high school “elves” showed up at Comprehensive Child Development (CCD), 2565 Pacific Ave., to wrap a mountain of children’s gifts on Wednesday, Dec. 16. Five girls from the Poly High School “S” Club (sponsored by Soroptimist International of Long Beach), five girls from Girl Scout Troup 674 and five girls from Wilson High School’s Junior Volunteer group (sponsored by the local chapter of Junior League) gathered to wrap and tag the gifts for infants, toddlers and preschool girls and boys.
The much-needed toys of all sorts, children’s books and snuggly blankets were gifted by the 200 employees of the Long Beach Schools Financial Credit Union who selected the 500 children of the five CCD early childhood development centers as the beneficiaries of their holiday giving, presenting them to CCD Executive Director Tammie Kyle at their annual breakfast on Dec. 16 at the Grand.
The gifts were marked for children by age and classroom . The volunteers (and two mothers) laughed and worked together as they cut yards and yards of wrapping paper.
CCD is a nonprofit which strives to provide affordable, high-quality early childhood education and nutrition programs, encouraging successful children and self-sufficient families. CCD provides three centers in Long Beach, one in San Pedro and one in Wilmington. All the children are from low-income working parents, and many are from single-parent homes. Each year the wish is to provide at least one book or gift for each child for the holiday.
