A man driving the wrong way on the southbound Long Beach (710) Freeway in Long Beach on early Thursday, Aug. 13, was killed in a head-on collision with an SUV that left the other motorist hospitalized.
The man died at the scene of the crash that occurred about 3:45 a.m. north of Wardlow Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.
According to the CHP, the man was driving a 2019 Dodge Challenger north on the southbound freeway lanes when his car collided head-on with a southbound 2016 GMC Acadia driven by a 29-year-old Buena Park woman.
The woman, whose name was not released, suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital, the CHP reported.
The crash prompted the closure of the southbound Long Beach Freeway in the area, as well as the transition road from the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway to the southbound Long Beach Freeway, until about 7:30 a.m., the CHP reported.
