The Long Beach Opera will present The Good Soldier Schweik at the Center Theater/Long Beach Performing Arts Center Saturday, Jan. 23 at 8pm. With its mix of jazz, brassy music, and contemporary opera idioms, this performance is the West Coast premiere of Robert Kurka’s critically acclaimed opera. Before Catch-22 and M.A.S.H., there was the story of The Good Soldier Schweik, a military satire based on Jaroslay Hasek’s 1923 novel. The story follows the misadventures of the soldier Schweik as he stumbles through World War I. He always tries to do the “right” thing, even if his good intentions destroy his superiors.
“Long Beach Opera’s The Good Soldier Schweik is a witty and entertaining masterpiece,” said Dan Spellens, Director of Theaters & Entertainment for the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center. “The satire takes the audience on a journey, exploring the ramifications of war that are still relevant today, and we are very pleased to welcome this production to the Center Theater.”
