Commute dispute

Has our government really gone mad? California can’t balance its budget, yet, according to the LA Times report Jan. 29, Senator Alan Lowenthal (my senator) says free parking is a “menace to California’s environment.” He wants us to take a bus, walk or ride a bike.
The senator has even won a proposal to prompt cities and businesses to reduce the availability of free parking. Does he really think telling private businesses they have to charge customers to park will solve our budget problems or help the environment?
I’d like to ask the good senator if he has given up his car to save the environment by walking around his district and taking a bus to Sacramento. I doubt I’d get an answer, as I’m sure he’s much too busy creating jobs and solving our budget crisis.
My wife Donnis and I are 17-year residents of Signal Hill, right near the top of the hill. We’d love to use public transportation, but there is none going over the hill. We’re over 75 and can hardly walk down to Cherry or Redondo to catch a bus, let alone carry our groceries back up the hill. From what I read and hear, the senator’s proposal is going nowhere. I am just struck by how “out of touch” our representatives really are.
