A Human Interest Story (or The Gory Details and All), by Carlos Murillo, is an unflinching portrait of a nation obsessed with voyeurism. Directed by Edgar Landa, this intriguing play opens Friday, March 5 at the Players Theater on the Cal State University, Long Beach South Campus, and runs for 15 performances, closing on Saturday, March 20th. Â
Somewhere in America, a mother wonders where her self-destructive teen got the gun, and how things ended up this way. A lonely man, fascinated by a documentary on baboons, fantasizes about his best friend’s wife. A suburban housewife momentarily loses sight of her children while her cat gets 15 minutes of fame. A politician relives a tragic second that changed his life. Stories interweave and overlap, like reception cutting in and out. And the characters find their reflection in the televised messages: the celebration of celebrity, the glorification of violence, and the mystery of the other.
Tuesday through Saturday performances begin at 8pm, with Saturday matinees at 2pm. The Players Theatre, 250 N. Bellflower Blvd., is accessible via West Campus Drive. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for seniors and students (with valid ID).
