Pilot program targets diabetes through education, exercise

The Fairfield Family YMCA and the Long Beach Diabetes Collaborative plans to implement a 12-month pilot project in North Long Beach to bring new services to the area for persons with or at-risk for diabetes. The Long Beach Diabetes Collaborative, which is led by the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, is working to develop a coordinated system of care and support for the prevention and management of diabetes in Long Beach through a community-based collaborative effort.
With help from the Boeing Foundation, a six-month healthy lifestyle program will be provided to a pilot group of 50 participants. The program will include weekly classes such as, yoga, aerobics, zumba, water aerobics, and strength training, as well as weekly group workouts using the YMCA’s gym facilities. Each participant will receive an individual assessment with a trainer.
The program will include a support group and educational component. Graduates of the program will receive a six-month YMCA membership.
The project will receive assistance from the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services.
The YMCA has been an active and key partner in the Long Beach Diabetes Collaborative since it began a year ago.
