Although Mom loves living at Bixby Knolls Towers, the one thing she misses about living in a condo near Signal Hill City Hall is the music during the city’s summertime Concerts in the Park at the corner of Cherry Avenue and Hill Street. Years ago she and my stepdad Jay would walk down to the park and enjoy the music in person. In later years they would just open their sliding glass door and let the music waft in.
When the original Signal newspaper building was located at the corner of Cherry and 21st Street, I could hear the music from my office window. If we finished the paper ahead of deadline I’d mosey on over and sit on the grass, sing along with the bands or maybe even dance a bit before heading home for the evening.
When we moved our offices further northwest of the Signal Hill Park, my staff and I pretty much resigned ourselves to missing all the concerts. With our deadline being 9 p.m. on Wednesdays–a 6:30 to 8 p.m. concert series was out of the question. Due to recent circumstances beyond our control our deadline has been moved back to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays. The change in deadline has allowed us to head over to the last four concerts of the season. Yippee!
Last week I had the chance to rub elbows with the corporate sponsors who make the concerts possible. They were recognized on stage and I had the opportunity to take a group picture.
Those honored were Diamond Sponsors–$3,000 & more: Supervisor Don Knabe, Signal Hill Petroleum, Shell Oil Products U.S. and Willow Urgent Care. Platinum Sponsors–$1,000: Aleshire & Wynder LLP, Charter Communications, Patrick Gough Company, Graner Oil Company, Kluger Architects, Lovell Corporation, Proscape Landscaping, Signal Hill Waste & Recycling and Universal Care Medical Group; Gold Sponsors–$500: Everson Spice Company, Schaier’s Nissan, Terry’s Tool Works & Terry Rogers Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage and PT Industries, Inc.; Silver Sponsors–$250: Courtyard Care Center, Golden Eagle Restaurant, Honeycutt Family, John L. Hunter & Assoc., Relax Medical Systems, Inc., RKA Consulting Group, Shannon Murphy, Signal Hill Employees’ Association, and W.G. Zimmerman Engineering.
If you haven’t made it to one of the concerts yet–here is the remaining schedule: Aug. 8–“Basik Boogie” (tribute to disco era) and Aug. 15–“80z All Stars” (Tribute to the 80s).
I hope to see you there.
