In celebration of National Bike Month and to further advance the City’s goal of becoming the most bike-friendly city in America, the City of Long
Beach has put together a calendar of activities for Bike Month 2010. The activities featured on the calendar have appeal for cyclists of all ages and skill levels, from the recreational rider to the everyday bike commuter.
Highlights of Long Beach Bike Month 2010 activities include:
Second Annual Long Beach Bike Festival May 7—9 (longbeachbikefest.org)
This cornucopia of bike-related festivities and activities includes:
• Fixed Gear Fest with contests (freestyle riding, trick, track stand and skid), live music, DJs, gear vendors, food and more on Friday, May 7, from 6pm to 11pm.
• Inaugural 30-mile Tour of Long Beach led by Mayor Bob Foster that highlights the City’s excellent bikeways, including the L.A. River Trail, Douglas Park, Heartwell Park, El Dorado Park, the San Gabriel River Trail, the Beach Bike Path and the Marina. Money raised from the Tour will benefit Miller Children’s Hospital. The tour starts at 8am on Saturday, May 8.
• Eight USA Cycling races (pro and amateur, men’s and women’s) on a .83-mile course in Downtown Long Beach on Saturday, May 8, from 9:30am to 6:15pm.
Bikestation fashion show with Euro street chic styles on Saturday, May 8, at 6:30pm.
4th Street in Motion festival, which will include a bike film festival at the Art Theatre, bike safety lessons, bike games, music, performing artists, and more, on Sunday, May 9, from 11am to 5pm.
Farmers Market Ride May 9 (longbeachcyclists.com/events)
Enjoy a relaxed morning ride from Portfolio Coffeehouse on Retro Row at 9:45am to the farmers market near Alamitos Bay Marina. Ride organized by the Long Beach Cyclists.
Bike to Work Week May 17-21 (bikelongbeach.org)
Long Beach will have three morning energizing stations (“pit stops”) for cyclists biking to work on Thursday, May 20. Pit stop locations will include California State University, Long Beach Walter Pyramid, Civic Center Plaza downtown, and Jones Bicycle Shop in Belmont Shore. Pit stops will offer cyclists grab & go breakfast items, free bike tune-ups, and opportunity drawings.
Bike Traffic Skills 101 Course May 19 & 22 (bikelongbeach.org)
California State University, Long Beach offers a free, two-part bike traffic skills course to help people brush up on their cycling skills.
Future of Biking in Long Beach Discussion May 25 (bikelongbeach.org/events)
Partake in a caffeine-fueled discussion at Portfolio Coffeehouse on the future of biking in Long Beach with Long Beach Mobility Coordinator Charles Gandy and others.
