Adults age 50 and older can find opportunities to learn, serve and connect with others by joining the Lakewood/Long Beach OASIS, which has offered self-enrichment, healthy lifestyle and volunteer opportunities since 1989. OASIS is a nationally recognized nonprofit education and service organization specifically focused on older adults.
OASIS aims to strengthen communities by offering adults opportunities to continue to learn, develop or enhance skills and become actively engaged in service to others. Participants can join thought-provoking discussions of local and world affairs, unleash their creative side with writing and art classes, get information and support that will help them make lasting healthy changes, and update their technology skills to stay in step with today’s world.
Community-service opportunities include tutoring at local schools, intergenerational exercise and nutrition programming for young students led by adults, and plenty of office work.
Membership is free with nominal fees for classes. It’s not too late to join OASIS and register for summer classes. OASIS is located in the Lakewood Mall, lower level of Macy’s. The Lakewood/Long Beach OASIS Center is open Monday through Friday, from 10am to 4pm.
