A 31-year-old Moreno Valley man suspected of killing a 54-year-old guard was arrested yesterday after he allegedly slammed an SUV into a guard station in Long Beach.
The crash occurred about 3 p.m. Saturday at the Century Villages at Cabrillo apartment complex in the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue, near Pacific Coast Highway and the Terminal Island (103) Freeway.
According to a preliminary LBPD investigation from Monday, the Chevy Tahoe was driving at a high rate of speed and appeared to lose control—striking the guard shack.
The man abandoned the Tahoe and fled the scene on foot before police arrived.
Responding officers found Derrick Smith, a resident of Los Angeles, injured inside the shack and provided medical aid until paramedics arrived. Medical personnel continued to administer aid, but Smith died of his injuries at the scene.
Police arrested Quentin Darnell Black on Monday in connection with the fatal crash and booked him into the Long Beach Police Department Jail. His bail was set at $100,000.
Century Villages at Cabrillo offers housing to veterans and people who previously experienced homelessness.
