Long Beach Olympic boxing hopeful Moises “Mighty Mo” Orozco joined some high profile names, including Quincy Jones, Oscar De La Hoya and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, to serve as a spokesperson for the 2016 Olympic committee in a 30-second PBS radio commercial (The committee was campaigning for Los Angeles to host the 2016 games. The spot was ultimately given to Chicago).
Orozco is a 10-year-old boxer who has swept up several titles since his first fight nearly two years ago. With only three losses in 23 fights, the young fighter hopes to eventually qualify for the Olympic team for the 2016 games.
Recently, Orozco took the gold medal at the 2007 Southern California Junior Olympic Boxing tournament for the second year in a row. Competing in the 70-pound weight class of 9 and 10 year olds, Orozco dominated his weight class in the four-day tournament, according to his father and coach, Rudy Orozco.
The senior Orozco is a former boxing contender as well, and the father-son team train regularly at the Fabela Chavez Boxing Club in Carson. Although most of their free time is spent in the gym, the two will get a special treat Friday, May 4, in Las Vegas.
“A friend arranged for us to go to the weigh-in [for the Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather],” said Coach Orozco, an exciting prospect for the young fighter in training as well as for his dad. The following day there will be no gym-time for the Orozcos; the whole family will be at home watching the fight.
