During its meeting July 19, the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) Board of Education approved a “lease-leaseback” contract agreement with Riverside-based Erickson-Hall Construction Company to create a new classroom building on the Jordan High School campus at 6500 Atlantic Ave. in North Long Beach.

The type of contract allows LBUSD to review actual project costs and pay the contractor a fee that includes a fixed overhead and profit amount.

At a cost of nearly $30.1 million—including an overhead and profit amount of 5%—the planned 31,500 square-foot building is “Phase 2B” of a multiyear expansion and renovation of Jordan High, which also includes new buildings for the school’s arts, communications and manufacturing academies, completed in 2017; a renovated library, kitchen and tennis courts; and a new auditorium completed in January.

The planned new building will house the school’s medical science academy, featuring a simulated patient lab with hospital beds and diagnostic equipment, LBUSD announced in March. The building plans also include a shaded lunch area.

Board Vice President Megan Kerr said a groundbreaking ceremony on the campus will take place Tuesday, Aug. 10 at 10 a.m. The new building is expected to open in September 2023.
