The Long Beach Police Department will hold a DUI checkpoint this Friday, Sept. 3 from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the East Patrol Divison.
Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests. During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
Prescription and over-the-counter medications can also impair drivers, as well as cannabis. Though cannabis is legal, driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal.
“The safety of our community is and always will be our mission,” Sergeant Steve Smock said in a statement. “We are still out there looking for impaired drivers because driving under the influence is still dangerous.”
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Updated on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 6:04 p.m. to replace the word marijuana with cannabis.
