Films Under the Stars
The Historical Society of Long Beach, along with the Museum of Latin American Art, is hosting Films Under the Stars Friday, Aug. 31 at 8 p.m. outside of the MOLAA, located at 628 Alamitos Avenue in Long Beach. The films will star actor Charlie Chaplin and will be accompanied by live piano music. The price is $10 for MOLAA members and $15 for non-members, and 1920s-style dress is encouraged. United States Youth Volleyball
Spaces are filling quickly for the United States Youth Volleyball League, an instructional league that operates in a coed format for boys and girls ages 7 to 14. Registration ends Sept. 1 and practices will start Sept. 12 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Whaley Park, located 5600 East Los Santos Drive in Long Beach. Long Beach Greek Festival
Come be Greek for a day or three at the 58th Annual Long Beach Greek Festival at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, located at 5761 East Colorado Street in Long Beach. On Saturday, Sept. 1 from noon until Monday, Sept. 3 at 9 p.m., the church will have authentic Greek food, dancing, dance lessons, along with Greek travel films and an area for children. Wrigley Crime Prevention
The Wrigley Area Neighborhood Alliance and the Long Beach Police Department will host the Wrigley area “crime prevention” meeting Thursday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Jackie Robinson Academy, located at 2750 Pine Avenue. The meeting will consist of updates on the gang and drug violence occurring in the area, information about the neighborhood watch program, and tips on graffiti abatement. Rancho Retreat
Rancho Los Cerritos (RLC) is hosting its Rancho Retreat Friday, Sept. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the RLC Historic Site, located 4600 Virginia Road in Long Beach. The event is a joint presentation by Friends of RLC and RLC Historic Site, Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine and the City of Long Beach. Spend an afternoon playing board games, painting, or reading at Rancho Los Cerritos and its historic gardens. Admission is free, and no reservations are required. NLB Community Action Group Meeting
The next general meeting of the North Long Beach Community Action Group (NLB CAG) will be Sunday, Sept. 9 at 2 p.m.at the North Long Beach Police Substation, located at 4891 Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach. City prosecutor Tom Reeves is expected to speak on Gotcha, graffitti and other programs within or a part of his office’s purvue. Radiation Therapy Lecture
Long Beach Memorial invites the public to attend “High-Tech, State-of-the-Art Radiation Therapy … Tomorrow’s Treatment Today,” a lecture about the life-saving machines of the future that are here today. Hear about high-tech equipment that eliminates cancer with less side effects. Discovery Well Park Family Festival
The City of Signal Hill’s Community Services Department invites the public to participate in the annual Discovery Well Park Family Festival on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. The theme is “safari party,” and the festival will include a safari hunt, games, contests, arts & crafts, a jumper, face painting, reptile display, photos with wild animals, and live musical entertainment.
