LBPD conducting DUI checkpoint in West Division

The Long Beach Police Department will conduct a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint on Friday, Sept. 10, from 6pm until 2am in the West Division. In an effort to reduce the number of people killed and injured in alcohol-involved crashes, DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as to educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving. All too often, members of the community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. This DUI/driver’s license checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies, as well as to ensure drivers have a valid driver’s license.
By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) believes motorists can be deterred from drinking and driving. Traffic volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be arrested.
On Friday, Sept. 3, the LBPD’s Traffic Section conducted a DUI Saturation Patrol throughout Long Beach, which operated from 6pm Friday until 2am Saturday. During the operation, 10 additional police officers patrolled the city looking for impaired drivers, resulting in five DUI arrests, one felony arrest, three drivers cited for unlicensed driving, three vehicles impounded, 70 citations issued and 20 parking citations.
The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 9-1-1 if they see a suspected impaired driver.Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. For more information, contact Sergeant Thomas Marcoux at (562) 570-7209.
