The Long Beach Public Works Department will hold a community meeting tonight at 6 p.m. via Zoom to inform residents about the current status of the Wrigley Greenbelt.
The project was plagued by years of failed bids and, more recently, expired permits and expiring County funding. Last month, the greenbelt received its third and final permit to move forward with development. A partnership with the Conservation Corps of Long Beach will help fill longstanding funding gaps.
“We want to thank the community for their patience and understanding,” Public Works Community Relations Officer Joy Contreras told the Signal Tribune last month, noting that the project had been a positive learning lesson.
The County-grant funded project is set to include a walking trail, new landscaping with drought-resistant plants, a new irrigation system and park amenities like benches, picnic tables and water fountains.
In March of this year, the project was halted by L.A. County inspectors in an abundance of caution after residents criticized tree-trimming and tree-removal on the project site, according to Project Manager Adrian Puyolt.
Tonight’s meeting will include a discussion of project updates, scheduled construction and an opportunity for questions and answers about the greenbelt.
Those interested in registering for the community meeting may do so here. The meeting requires registration in advance. Those who register will receive a confirmation email containing the Zoom meeting information.
