An unhoused man was fatally shot within a vacant building in Long Beach on Saturday, Jan. 29.
Officers with the Long Beach Police Department were dispatched at approximately 2:05 p.m. on Jan. 29 in response to a reported shooting in the 1400 block of Long Beach Boulevard, according to an LBPD press release.
When officers arrived to the scene they found a male adult victim within the vacant building suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body, police said.
The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Eduardo Alonso.
According to police, officers immediately started performing emergency care on Alonso until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene and determined that Alonso was deceased.
Alonso was experiencing homelessness at the time of his death.
According to a preliminary investigation by LBPD, the vacant building was being used as an encampment by people experiencing homelessness.
According to LBPD, evidence suggests that either one or multiple suspects were involved in an altercation with the victim inside the building.
The suspect or suspects were last seen southbound in the alley behind the building, according to LBPD.
The motive for the shooting is currently unknown and the shooting is being investigated as being gang-related.
