Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster received the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s (SCAQMD) S. Roy Wilson Memorial Award for Leadership in Government during the organization’s 22nd Annual Clean Air Awards last Friday. The award was in recognition for the mayor’s work in cleaning the air around the Port of Long Beach, including his leadership in the Clean Trucks Program, as well as his environmental leadership in both state and national organizations.
The award is named after the late S. Roy Wilson, a former Riverside County Supervisor and SCAQMD Governing Board Vice Chairman who was a clean air champion. The award is given to an individual who serves as a role model for leadership and gives exemplary service in the arena of clean air. Foster received his first Clean Air Award in 2007 for his leadership in the clean-up of Port-related emissions.
Foster currently serves on the Board of Governors of the California Independent System Operator, which looks at policies and resources necessary to reduce barriers in energy conservation and to strengthen the green portion of California’s energy mix. He also served two terms as Environmental Committee Chair for the US Conference of Mayors that helps to influence environmental policy across the country.
The Port of Long Beach was also recognized with SCAQMD’s Model Community Achievement award for the Clean Truck Program.
