A pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle on Jan. 27 passed away due to the accident, the Long Beach Police Department announced Feb. 20.
Long Beach police were dispatched to the area of Cherry Avenue and 15th Street on Jan. 27, 2022 at approximately 6:22 a.m. in response to a reported traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian.
After arriving at the scene, officers found that a 2007 Audi had struck a pedestrian.
Police said a preliminary investigation found that the 2007 Audi was driving southbound on Cherry Avenue through a green light at 15th Street when the pedestrian began to cross Cherry Avenue despite the “Don’t Walk” sign.
Police said the 2007 Audi was unable to stop in time to avoid striking the pedestrian.
The Long Beach Fire Department arrived at the scene prior to LBPD and rendered first aid to the victim. Although he was reported as being in stable condition after LBFD personnel transported him to a local hospital, LBPD was notified Feb. 20 that he died from his wounds.
The victim was identified as 58-year-old John Kim of Long Beach.
The Audi was driven by a 32-year-old male resident of Long Beach who stayed at the scene of the collision and cooperated with the police investigation.
Police said distracted driving, impaired driving, and speed were not believed to be a factor at the time of the collision.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone who may have information regarding the collision is asked to contact Detective K. Johansen or Detective S. Loughlin of the Long Beach Police Department Collision Investigation Detail at 1-562-570-7355.
