Six years ago next Tuesday this country experienced a tragedy only equaled in emotionality by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Like the day of his death, most of us remember where we were when we learned of the destruction of the World Trade Towers, the damage of the Pentagon and the plane crash in rural Pennsylvania.
To commemorate the 6th anniversary of September 11, 2001, the City of Signal Hill will adorn the city’s Unity Monument with flags and flowers. The public is invited to visit the memorial structure in order to reflect on the tragic events and to remember those who lost their lives that day. The Unity Monument, designed and created by local artist Patrick Vogel, is located on Temple Avenue near Hill Street and the Discovery Well Park. The community is encouraged to bring flowers and candles to the site. For more information on the Unity Monument contact the city’s Community Services Department at (562) 989-7330.
Understanding of our collective need to remember and reflect, veteran and local realtor Mike Kowal has donated dozens of beautiful full-color posters of a flag draping Twin Towers to be given to our readers (see photo below). Please stop by our office (2669 Myrtle Avenue #111) today, Friday, Monday or Tuesday and pick one up. I will also bring several to give away at the September 11 Signal Hill Council meeting, 2175 Cherry Avenue. The meeting takes place at 7 p.m. Thanks again to Mike Kowal for his kindness and generosity.
