A man in his 20s was fatally shot on Tuesday, March 29 in the 400 block of South Street in Long Beach, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Officers arrived at the scene at approximately 12:44 a.m. in response to a report of a person down in the street with a gunshot wound, police said.

LBPD said officers found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.

Officers began rendering first aid until Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) personnel arrived and took the victim to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, police said.

A preliminary investigation by homicide detectives found that the suspect or suspects approached the victim and got into a “verbal dispute,” police said. The argument escalated to a physical fight and eventually to a shooting.

Police said no suspect information is available at this time and the motive for the shooting is believed to be gang-related.

The identity of the victim is being withheld from the public pending notification of his next of kin by the Department of the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner.
