Justin Rudd will host his 100th consecutive “30-Minute Beach Cleanup” on Saturday, Sept 15, at 10 a.m. at the end of Granada Avenue in Long Beach. The public is invited to come help clean and then stay to celebrate following the event.
The volunteer celebration will begin at 10:40 a.m. and will include free hot dogs, beach cleanup T-shirts to any volunteer who has attended at least two cleanups, awards to selected contributors as well as extra door prizes and a few words from city council members, dignitaries, and staff members.
Since the first cleanup in June 1999, volunteers have cleared more than 10,000 bags of trash from local beaches.
The 30-Minute Beach Cleanup celebrated its eight-year anniversary in June 2007 and seeks to provide a clean, safe place on the beach every month. The cleanup is part of founder Justin Rudd’s nonprofit “Community Action Team” (CAT).
“Tons of debris foul the sands and endangers human and canine visitors and aquatic wildlife,” said Rudd. “We are looking for families and individuals of all ages to come out and support the effort to help make [the city’s] beaches safe, clean and beautiful.”
Volunteers will be provided bags, gloves, parking, refreshments, community service credit and merit badges. The cleanup route starts at the end of Granada Avenue and progresses toward the Belmont Pier and the Peninsula.
