Operation Jump Start assists less privileged Long Beach area high school students who demonstrate academic potential.
Mentors are given training and support in order to help students develop the capacity and confidence to fulfill their dreams of attaining higher education.
The program offers students programs such as mentoring, tutoring, cultural opportunities and scholarships.
Mentors are asked to commit a minimum of six to eight hours per month to their students. Mentors provide guidance, encouragement and coaching to help students meet goals and develop problem-solving techniques.
Typical mentor student activities include movies, sporting events, museum visits, concerts, lunches, etc.
Mentors must be at least 24 years of age, non-smoking and willing to commit to a long-term relationship with a student.
