Flatline Gallery has permanently closed its doors, but owner Elizabeth Munzón plans to use everything she learned there in her new studio in Cambodia Town.
Flatline Gallery first opened in North Long Beach in 2017, and since then Munzón has curated a wide variety of exhibits featuring the work of local artists.
“[Flatline Gallery] was the perfect space to experiment with programming, to do trial and error,” Munzón said. “[…] But ultimately I decided, ‘Okay, well I’m just gonna close down this space and then whatever I learned here I’m just gonna take that and open up the new space and kind of refine all of that in the new space.”
Munzón found the new location for Munzón Gallery spontaneously in her own neighborhood.
“When I went to go check it out I really liked the space and I feel like I’m able to do a lot with it,” Munzón said. “All the ideas that I had that I wasn’t able to do in the old space, I feel that I can do in this space.”
Munzón Gallery, located at 1730 E Anaheim St. #A, will open to the public for the first time on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23 as part of the Long Beach Open Studio Tour, an annual event that invites the community to visit local art studios and galleries throughout the city.
According to Munzón, Munzón Gallery is expected to re-open sometime this winter. Besides curating exhibits there, Munzón will use the studio to create her own art, alongside three other artists. She is still looking for one or two more resident artists to fill the space.
Munzón said the opening of Munzón Gallery will be kicked off with a four-to-six-week exhibit.
“It’s been a lot of work,” Munzón said. “It’s been overwhelming, but ultimately I’m really excited. I’m just really excited to start planning out programming and having people over to check it out and inviting artists and all that.”
