Interfaith Ramadan Banquet
The Long Beach Islamic Center, the Muslim community of Long Beach and the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California invites the public to join them for their Annual Interfaith Ramadan Dinner Sunday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Westin Hotel, located at 333 East Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach. Some of the guests expected to attend are the deputy director of Customs & Border Protection, Cardinal Roger Mahony, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Good Neighbor Festival, Family Picnic
The 5th Council District Good Neighbor Network will host its first Good Neighbor Festival and Family Picnic on Sunday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at El Dorado Park, located at 2800 North Studebaker Road. The festival will feature a variety of booths, live music by the Elm Street Band, a historic fire truck as well as free hot dogs and hamburgers. Fifth District Council Member Gerrie Schipske will present Good Neighbor Awards, recognizing the ongoing efforts of those who have made an impact on the community. Elks Breakfast
The Elks of Bellflower and Long Beach invite the public to join them for their monthly Elks Breakfast, which will take place Sunday, Sept. 23 from 8 a.m. to noon. The menu includes eggs “any way you like them,” bacon, sausage, hash browns, biscuits with gravy, orange juice, Belgian waffles, assorted fruits and coffee. The cost is $5 per person and the breakfast will be at the Bellflower/Long Beach Elks Lodge #888, located at 16426 Bellflower Boulevard in Bellflower.
Free Family Sunday
Sunday, Sept. 23 is Free Family Sunday at the Museum of Latin American Art. There will be an art workshop from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and flutist Ramón RodrÃguez will be playing live music in the galleries from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The galleries will feature art such as Gabriela Sincich’s “Potato: A Pre-Columbian Treasure.” For more information, call (562) 437-1689 or visit www.molaa.org.
Social Security Presentation
Signal Hill’s Community Services Department will present Frank Van Nostrand, Social Security’s public affairs specialist on Tuesday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to discuss how Social Security works, as well as eligibility and cost of Medicare. Quit Smoking Classes
Long Beach Memorial is conducting a seven-week stop smoking class entitled “No Ifs, Ands or Butts About it–Quit Smoking for Good This Time” beginning Thursday, Sept. 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Memorial Integrative Wellness Center, located at 2600 Redondo Avenue, Suite 502 in Long Beach. The American Association of University Women meeting is presenting Dr. Beverly O’Neill, who will share her experiences as mayor of Long Beach on Oct. 6 in the Los Altos Methodist Church conference room on Willow at Woodruff. Mental Illness Awareness Lecture
Community Hospital of Long Beach is hosting a health lecture in honor of Mental Illness Awareness Week on Monday, Oct. 8 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The lecture will be given by Cathy Williamson, a mental health board member with the Long Beach chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and NAMI President Caroline Erhlich to educate the public about mental illness.
