The League of Women Voters and California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) will sponsor debates for candidates running for the 28th Senatorial District on Wednesday, Jan. 26 from 3pm to 5pm, at The Pointe in the Walter Pyramid on the CSULB campus. The public is welcome to attend. Eight candidates have qualified for the Feb. 15 special election to replace state Sen. Jenny Oropeza, who died on Oct. 20. Among the candidates are Democrats Ted Lieu and Kevin Thomas McGurk, Republicans Jeffrey E. Fortini, Martha Flores-Gibson, James P. Thompson and Bob Valentine, and third-party candidates Michael Chamness and Mark Lipman. Free parking will be available in Lot 13, right next to the Pyramid. The League of Women Voters will host a Signal Hill candidate forum Monday, Feb. 7 from 6pm to 7:30pm at Signal Hill City Council Chambers, 2175 Cherry Ave. All three candidates have confirmed their attendance: incumbents Larry Forester and Tina Hansen; and challenger Matt Simmons.
