Rainbow Promotions will present A Valentine Concert for Friends and Lovers, featuring artists Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright, Peter White, Jeff Golub, and special guest artist Michael Franks, for an evening of soulful jazz at the Terrace Theater/Long Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7pm.
From his early days in Memphis playing in his father’s church choir, veteran saxophonist Kirk Whalum draws inspiration from the rich musical traditions of that city. Whalum is an eight-time Grammy-nominated saxophonist and songwriter who has recorded a series of well-received solo albums in genres ranging from pop and R&B to smooth jazz.
Whether he is playing contemporary jazz or producing his own music on the bass guitar, Gerald Albright stands in a class of his own. Albright is known for his talent on the saxophone, working with famous artists such as Olivia Newton-John, Ray Parker, and The Temptations. Albright has nine albums under his belt and has sold over 1,000,000 albums in the US alone.
After working as a backup musician for 15 years, smooth jazz guitarist Peter White decided to go solo. His distinctive guitar style has earned him several coveted awards for his work including: Guitarist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year at the 2010 Smooth Jazz Awards.
Distinguished contemporary-jazz guitarist Jeff Golub is best known for his work with Rod Stewart, with whom he toured for seven years before breaking out on his own. Golub now has six solo records and three successful records with the instrumental band Avenue Blue.
Singer-songwriter Michael Franks has captivated audiences worldwide with his work in jazz, soul, and pop music. He is best known for his songs: “Popsicle Toes,” “Monkey See-Monkey Do,” “The Lady Wants to Know,” and “Tiger in the Rain.”
“It is an honor to have such a talented and diverse group of jazz musicians come together for this special concert,” said Dan Spellens, director of Theaters & Entertainment for the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center. “We are excited to welcome them to the Long Beach Terrace Theater.”
