The Long Beach Airport will temporarily close some of its runways from March through July as critical lighting improvements are installed.
The $9.5 million project is funded by an Airport Improvement Program grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which will bring the airport’s main runway in line with the current FAA standards and add to the airport’s sustainability efforts.
The improvements include adding over 500 new energy-efficient LED lights to the electrical system along Runway 12-30, replacement of all electrical cable powering runway lights and navigational aids, replacement of the runway touchdown zone lights that allow aircraft to land in low visibility conditions safely, and restoration and improvements to asphalt and concrete.
For safety, Runway 12-30 will be closed nightly on Sundays through Thursdays from March 29 to mid-July. In addition, Runway 12-30 will be closed daily on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between April 18 and May 24.
