The Signal Hill City Council appointed Daritza Gonzalez as the new city clerk on Tuesday, April 11.
The council chose between two candidates, Gonzalez and Kiran Gidwani. Council members took turns asking both candidates questions, such as why they wanted the position and how they would handle issues with residents.
“I love Signal Hill,” Gonzalez said. “I’m applying here today because I love the city. I want to be involved in more ways than one.”
According to Gonzalez, she has lived in Signal Hill for 23 years and attended the local Alvarado Elementary School.
Councilmembers Ed Wilson, Keir Jones and Mayor Tina Hansen voted for Gonzalez, while Councilmember Lori Woods voted for Gidwani. Councilmember Robert Copeland was not present for the vote.
According to the city’s website, the city clerk is responsible for administering democratic processes (such as elections), organizing ceremonial and official events, managing public inquiries and relationships, as well as providing access to city records and legislative actions to ensure public transparency.
Former City Clerk Carmen Brooks stepped down from the position because she is moving to Atlanta to be closer to family. Brooks’ last day in office was March 1. Brooks served as city clerk for four years, and her term wasn’t due to end until Dec. 2026.
The city was able to choose between appointing a new city clerk or holding a special election. On Feb. 14, Signal Hill City Council members unanimously voted to appoint a replacement.
Gonzalez serves on the Civil Service Commission, and will be stepping down from the commission to serve as city clerk.
“I am always looking at different ways that I can be involved in the city,” Gonzalez said. “And I thought this was one way that aligned very well with my skills.”
