A 41-year-old Long Beach man suspected of attempting to rape a woman in an alley behind a pharmacy in Westminster after she refused to engage in oral sex with him was arrested, police said Tuesday.

Officers responded to the 15400 block of Brookhurst Street, near Cunningham Avenue, at around 11:45 p.m. Saturday to a report of an attempted sexual assault behind a CVS Pharmacy, according to Westminster Police Department Sgt. Eddie Esqueda.

A woman told arriving officers that she was sitting in the alley when Ernesto Nuno approached her and revealed his genitals to her moments before asking the woman to copulate him orally, Esqueda said.

She refused to engage in sexual activities with Nuno, prompting him to punch the woman in the face and head while attempting to remove her pants and weigh her down with his body, Esqueda said.

In self-defense, the woman retrieved her pocket knife and stabbed Nuno, forcing him to relent, Esqueda said.

Officers later located Nuno with an injury to his right hand consistent with being stabbed and arrested him without incident, Esqueda said.

Nuno was booked into the Orange County Jail on suspicion of attempted rape and assault with intent to rape.

Anyone with information regarding this crime was urged to call the Westminster Police Department at 714-548-3783. Tipsters who choose to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS.
