Put off the back to school prep and instead grab some family and friends to enjoy the many fun, mostly free ways to spend the week in Long Beach and Signal Hill.
Long Beach is prepping for the annual pride celebration next weekend with a myriad of community events. Residents can celebrate the trans community at a celebration at Recreation Park Saturday or enjoy a pride-themed art pop-up with performances at the Black Bar Sunday.
Soak in the sun at one of many outdoor gatherings this week such as the annual Dragon Boat Racing Festival at Marine Stadium Saturday morning, a group run through Signal Hill Monday night or one of many outdoor movie screenings and concerts.
Friday 7/28
Comedy & Juggling: 11 a.m. to noon. Juggler and comedian Michael Rayner will be performing for visitors of all ages at El Dorado Neighborhood Library (2900 N Studebaker). Free.
New Works Festival: 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. The Long Beach Shakespeare Company will be celebrating its 2023 season with a weekend long festival. Residents can watch three plays and listen to a discussion following at the Helen Borgers Theatre (4250 Atlantic Ave.) Tickets are $15 for the public and $13 for students.
Movie in the Park: 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The public is invited to an outdoor screening of the movie “Toy Story” at Whaley Park (5620 Atherton St.). Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, blanket and picnic food. The movie will begin at dusk. Free.
Saturday 7/29
Dragon Boat Racing Festival: 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. This event will feature dragon boat races, traditional Chinese art demonstrations, acrobats, traditional dance, music and martial arts performances at Marine Stadium (5255 E. Paoli Way). Free.
Homelessness Drive: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents are invited to donate clothing, hygiene kits, pet supplies, food items and more to those experiencing homelessness during this city-run donation drive. The event will take place at the Department of Health and Human Services Main Facilities Center, located at 2525 Grand Ave.Free.
Dog Days of Summer Party: noon to 10 p.m. Dog lovers can flock to Trademark Brewing (233 E Anaheim St.) for the brewery’s first-ever dog-centric party. All day pups and their people can enjoy dog costume contests, caricature drawings, dog-toy vendors and food stands. Free to attend.
Trans Pride Celebration: 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Long Beach will celebrate the trans community at this celebration at Recreation Park (4900 E Seventh St.) featuring live music performances, DJs, speakers, a clothing giveaway, food trucks, drag queen story time, a family fun zone and more. Free.
Bubble Tea Making for Teens: 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Teens and tweens are invited to learn how to make milk teas at Harte Library (1595 W Willow St.). There will be green and jasmine tea, as well as milk alternatives that participants can try. There is only room for 20 participants, and space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Free.
Film Trivia: 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Art Theatre of Long Beach (2025 E Fourth St.) invited film snubs and enthusiasts to their second trivia night. Questions will cover blockbuster hits, cult classics and everything in between, with a prize for the winning team. Free.
Sunday 7/30
Psych Rock Yoga: 12:30 p.m. Those 21 and older are invited to practice yoga asanas while listening to psych rock songs at Alex’s Bar (2913 East Anaheim St.). Afterwards, drinks and vegan food will be available for purchase. Free to attend.
Tai Chi for Wellness: 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The public is invited to learn the traditional exercise of Tai Chi at Will Rogers Mini Park (5131 Appian Way). Participation is free, but donations are welcome.
Plus Size Clothing Swap: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Residents who would like to swap plus size clothing are invited to the Long Beach Beer Lab (518 W Willow St.). The event is exclusively for plus sized clothing and all genders are welcome. Free.
Long Beach Pride Art Pop-Up: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Residents are invited to this Long Beach Pride kick-off at the Black Bar (1800 E. Broadway) to enjoy a drag show, clothing drive, specialty drinks, art and raffled off prizes. Free to attend.
Willow Springs Experiences: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friends of Willow Springs Park is continuing its inaugural Willow Springs Experiences series with a photography class at the garden (2745 Orange Ave.) Participants will explore the garden, take pictures, edit their photos and upload them to a private Facebook page for the group to see. Free to attend, but reservations are required through WSPExperiences@gmail.com
Silent Disco: 6 p.m. So We Are Silent Disco invites the community to surrender themselves to the music and tune into their bodies by the beach (3998 E Allin St.). All participants will be given a pair of headphones and encouraged to try “ecstatic dance” while listening to a curated playlist. General admission costs $30. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite.
Monday 7/31
Tech Girls Workshop: 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is the first day of a week-long STEM day camp for middle and high school girls at the Salvation Army (3092 Long Beach Blvd.). Participants will be introduced to engineering and computing, as well as hear from women working in STEM fields. Registration costs $25, but if a child attends all five days of camp the registration fee will be returned.
Group Run: 6:30 p.m. The Long Beach Run Club hosts a weekly run to the top of Signal Hill. Runners will meet at the intersection of Willow St. and Cherry Ave., outside the Home Depot. Free.
Trivia Night: 7 p.m. Those 21 and older are invited to the Auld Dubliner (71 S Pine Ave.) to participate in a weekly trivia competition hosted by America’s Pub Quiz. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Free to attend.
Movie in the Park: 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The public is invited to an outdoor screening of the PG-13 movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” at Somerset Park (1500 E. Carson St.). Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, blanket and picnic food. The movie will begin at dusk. Free.

National Night Out in Signal Hill: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The public is invited to Signal Hill Park (2175 Cherry Ave.) to meet the members of the Signal Hill Police Department while enjoying music, games, presentations, giveaways and more. Free.
Concerts in the Park: 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to enjoy a concert by the Long Beach Municipal Band at the Bixby Annex Park (Intersection of Cherry Ave. and Ocean Blvd.) featuring songs by Glen Miller, The Beach Boys, Stan Kenton and more. Free.

Long Beach 20204 Budget Presentation: 9 a.m. Long Beach officials will present the proposed 2024 fiscal year budget, detailing how the city plans to spend $3.2 billion. The city will also present an updated five-year infrastructure plan during the conference at the Admiral Kidd Park Community Center (2125 Santa Fe Ave.) Free.
Baby & Toddler Storytime: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Babies and their caregivers are invited to Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E. Hill St.) to enjoy stories and playtime. Free.
LB Symphony Orchestra Petting Zoo: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Local kids are invited to touch, interact with and try different musical instruments at the Harte Neighborhood Library (1595 W Willow St.). The event is meant to foster an interest in playing music. Free.
Virtual Neighborhood Grant Program Application Workshop: 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Neighborhood Associations are invited to learn how to apply for grants of up to $10,000 from the City of Long Beach during this online workshop.
