Parenting Classes
The Long Beach Police Athletic League is offering a series of courses beginning tonight to assist and educate parents on issues pertaining to their children. The classes, which will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday until Nov. 15, will be taught at North PAL, located at 2311 East South Street in Long Beach. The cost is $20 and child care for children ages 7 to 17 will be provided while classes are in session. Dialogue on Global Climate Change
Local residents will have the opportunity to share their opinions and ideas on reducing the impact of global climate change at a city-wide dialogue, taking place at The Aquarium of the Pacific tonight from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Members from the business, educational and environmental communities will also be present to address global climate change issues, sustainability and how citizens and city leaders can work together to explore how Long Beach can set an example for the rest of California and the nation. Admission to attend is free, but reservations are required by Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. The Aquarium of the Pacific is located at 100 Aquarium Way in Long Beach. For more information, call (562) 590-3100.

Ovarian and Breast Cancer Walk
Fight breast and ovarian cancer by participating in the Team Spirit Long Beach Breast and Ovarian Cancer 10K Walk Saturday, Oct. 6 at 8 a.m. at the Long Beach Yacht Club, located at 6201 East Appian Way in Long Beach. Donations received will help fund breast and ovarian cancer research, support and treatment at Memorial Care Breast Center at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. American Assoc. of University Women
The American Association of University Women is presenting Dr. Beverly O’Neill, who will share her experiences as mayor of Long Beach on Saturday, Oct. 6 in the Los Altos Methodist Church conference room on Willow at Woodruff. Refreshments will be served at 9 a.m. and the presentation will follow at 11 a.m. The Los Altos United Methodist Church is located at 5950 East Willow Street in Long Beach. LB Republican Women Federated Meeting
The Long Beach Republican Women Federated will meet for a breakfast buffet at Francelli’s Restaurant at 3404 East 4th Street Saturday, Oct. 6 at 10 a.m. The meeting will feature planning for next spring and a jewelry display by Rachel Granneman showing Silpada designs. NLB Community Action Group Meeting
The next general meeting of the North Long Beach Community Action Group will be Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. at the north Long Beach police substation, located at 4891 Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach. LBUSD Superintendent Chris Steinhauser will speak on the new Architecture, Construction and Engineering Academy at Jordan High School, educational performance and other related topics. Mental Illness Awareness Lecture
Community Hospital of Long Beach is hosting a health lecture in honor of Mental Illness Awareness Week Monday, Oct. 8 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The lecture will be given by Cathy Williamson, a mental health board member with the Long Beach chapter of the National Association of Mental Illness and NAMI President Caroline Erhlich to educate public about mental illness. Amateur Orchid Society Meeting
The Long Beach Amateur Orchid Society will be having a meeting Monday, Oct. 8 at American Legion Post 496, located at 5938 Parkcrest Street in Long Beach at 7 p.m. The meeting will feature noted hybridizer and hobby grower Tony Velardi in his presentation entitled “What’s in My Back Yard.” For more information, call Karen Moy at (562) 928-8718.
