A construction team broke ground on a $75 million Performing Arts Center at Long Beach City College’s Liberal Arts Campus on Sept. 20.

The building is replacing the former Music Building G and Theatre Arts Building H to teach arts, music, dance, radio, TV and broadcasting classes.

“LBCC’s Performing Arts programs are not only an important cornerstone of our campus life but also a wonderful source of artistic enrichment and entertainment for the broader community,” said LBCC Board of Trustees President Herlinda Chico in a statement.

The 67,000-square-foot center is being funded by state allocations, Measure E and Measure LB bonds.

Measure E is a $440 million bond issue passed by voters in 2018 and Measure LB is a $850 million bond issue passed by voters in 2016. Both bond measures have funded construction and renovations at the LBCC Pacific Coast Campus and the school’s Liberal Arts Campus.

Once open in spring 2026, the two-story building will include instructional classrooms, specialized labs, private music rooms, student studios, a dance studio, a black box studio, a broadcast studio, a new home for the campus radio station, a 236-seat auditorium and an outdoor performance stage.

“This incredible Performing Arts Center will be equipped with state-of-the-art design and technology facilities, and represents a wonderful leap forward for both our students and faculty in the field of performing arts education,” said LBCC Superintendent-President Dr. Mike Muñoz in a statement.

The project architect is the DLR Group and the general contractor is Bernards. The Cordoba Corporation oversees all Measure E and LB projects.
