Things to do in Long Beach: Cumbia night, Halloween zine release party, solar eclipse party and more!

The spooky season is in full swing, as businesses, neighborhoods and nonprofits gear up for Halloween, Samhain, Day of the Dead and more Fall holidays, and there’s plenty of opportunities for locals to get into the spirit. 

There will be a Halloween-themed Cumbia night at local bar the Bamboo Room on Saturday, followed by the release party of a Halloween-themed zine the next day. Kids can make spooky crafts on Tuesday at Billie Jean King Library, and teens can make decorations out of glowsticks on Thursday.

Those looking to spend more time out in nature now that the temperature is dropping and the leaves are changing, there’s multiple opportunities to help clean various areas of Long Beach and Signal Hill, and a bird walking tour through the El Dorado Nature Center.

Friday 10/13

Dive Into School: 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Caregivers are invited to bring children ages 3 to 5 to the Mark Twain Neighborhood Library (1401 E Anaheim St.) to practice the fine motor skills they will need in school. Free.

Restoration Fridays: 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help care for native plants and pull weeds at Willow Springs Park (2745 Orange Ave.). Volunteers are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle, comfortable shoes and sunscreen. Free.

And Then LB’s Wicked Weekend: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Local business And Then LB (3803 Atlantic Ave.) will be hosting various vendors and events Friday and Saturday to celebrate the spooky weekend. Friday will include tarot readings, art, flash tattoos, crochet creations and tooth gems. Free to attend.

Saturday 10/14

Solar Eclipse Party: 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Local camera store Tuttle Cameras is hosting a party for the solar eclipse at at Heartwell Park, near Heartwell Lake, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuttle Cameras will be providing the cameras and special lenses, attendees just need to bring an SD card to save their own photos. Free.

Fall Mayor’s Clean Up: 9 a.m. Volunteers are needed to help clean the Southeast Industrial Neighborhood in Signal Hill (1855 Coronado Ave.). Water and light snacks will be provided. Gloves, trash bags and grabbers will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Used Motor Oil and Filter Drop-Off: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is invited to dispose of their electronic waste and household hazardous waste materials such as used motor oil at EDCO (2755 California Ave.). For a full list of items that are being accepted go to longbeach.gov/lbrecycles. Free.

Beach Clean Up: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Volunteers are needed to help clean litter off the beach (2100 E Ocean Blvd.). Bags, gloves and a parking code will be provided. The first 12 volunteers will receive free grilled cheese sandwiches from the Pike Bar. Free.

Art Gallery Opening: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Rod Briggs Memorial Gallery (2221 E Broadway) is hosting a two-day opening reception for its Memento Mori and The Macabre show, with over 300 pieces of art. The exhibit explores the impermanence of life and the beauty of death. Free.

Art Exhibit Opening: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Arts Council for Long Beach will be hosting an opening reception for its annual Professional Artist Fellows at the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W Broadway Blvd.). Free.

Trik-O-Cumbia: 9 p.m. Those 21 and older are invited to the Bamboo Club (3522 E Anaheim St.) to listen all night to the cumbia selections of DJs Rigo Suave, Gary Ventura and Alex Ramirez. Free entry.

Sunday 10/15

Bird Walk: 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Residents and birders can explore local bird species in this guided walk at Ranchos Los Cerritos (4600 Virginia Road). Registration is required; to register, call (562) 570-1745. Free.

Howl-O-Ween Costume Contest: Noon to 5 p.m. Beachwood Brewing’s Bixby Knolls Taproom (3630 Atlantic Ave.) will host a dog Halloween costume contest with puppachinos, music, giveaways, prizes, food, dog activities and more. Free to attend.

Children’s Art Workshop: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Children will learn how to make art prints using corn and other natural materials at the Museum of Latin American Art (628 Alamitos Ave.). Materials will be provided. Spaces are limited. Free.

Halloween Zine Release Party: 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Local creator This Goth Bitch will be celebrating the release of a new Halloween-themed zine at community space Place LB (930 Pacific Ave.). There will also be a horror movie marathon in Place’s microcinema. It’s suggested that attendees make a $10 donation at the door.

Walktoberfest Beer Bus: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Bixby Knolls Big Red Bus will be taking residents to the various breweries of the neighborhood in their Brewery Knolls Tour. All ages are welcome on the bus. Free.

Monday 10/16

Mobile Recess: 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Kids between the ages of 5 and 14 are invited to participate in sports and arts and crafts in a safe environment during this City-run after-school program at Grace Park (361 E. Plymouth St.). Free.

Trivia Night: 7 p.m. Those ages 21 and older are invited to the Auld Dubliner (71 S Pine Ave.) to participate in a weekly trivia competition hosted by America’s Pub Quiz. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Free to attend.

Tuesday 10/17

Drop-in After School Program: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Students from the 3rd to 5th grade are invited to enjoy STEAM crafts, 3D printing, gaming, snacks and more at the Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E Hill St.). Free.

Art Club: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Everyone ages 12 and older are invited to create Halloween-themed illustrations at the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway.). Supplies will be provided. Free.

Wednesday 10/18

Flu Vaccination Clinic: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) will be administering flu vaccinations at Silverado Park (1545 W 31st St.). This initiative aims to prepare residents for the upcoming flu season, which typically spans from mid-fall to mid-spring. Free.

Blood Drive: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers are needed to donate life-saving blood at the Museum of Latin American Art (628 Alamitos Ave.). Free.

DIY Craft Club: 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Children over 8 and their caregivers are invited to create crafts together at the Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E. Hill St.). Each child must be accompanied by an adult. All materials will be provided. Reservations are required, and can be made by calling (562) 989-7323. Free.

Thursday 10/19

Teen Creative Club: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Teens are invited to make Halloween decor out of glow sticks at Brewitt Neighborhood Library (4036 E Anaheim St.). Free.

Teen College Application Workshop: 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Teens are invited to learn about the college admissions process at Harte Neighborhood Library (1595 W. Willow St.). This workshop will be taught by Alondra Candelario, a Basic Needs Advisor for UC Santa Barbara. Free.

Imagine the Future of Scherer Park: 6:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. The public is asked to give feedback on future plans for Scherer Park at the Boys & Girls Club Eastman Clubhouse (700 E Del Amo Blvd.). The City will be presenting two options for updates to the park. Free.
