A vehicle rear-ended an ambulance on the Long Beach (710) Freeway early Monday, killing a passenger in the car, whose driver was arrested on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter for allegedly driving while intoxicated, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched at about 2:10 a.m. to the crash involving a 2018 Honda Civic and a Long Beach Fire Department BLS unit on the northbound 710 Freeway at Seventh Street, the Long Beach Police Department reported.

Paramedics already at the location were treating the driver of the Honda, 27-year-old Christian Castillas. He was subsequently taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

His passenger, a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity is being withheld pending notification of her family.

Police said the Honda rear-ended the ambulance and then struck the center median. No one was injured inside the ambulance.

Castillas was eventually taken into custody and arrested on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony driving under the influence causing bodily injury. His bail was set at $100,000.

Long Beach police urged anyone with information about the crash to call them at 562-570-7355.
