The City of Long Beach will be hosting a virtual community meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 13 to provide updates on the Colorado Lagoon expansion.

The Colorado Lagoon Open Channel Project’s goal is to reestablish a connection between the lagoon and the Pacific Ocean, promoting natural water circulation, potentially enhancing water quality, and restoring part of the former Los Cerritos Wetlands’ natural habitat.

The Colorado Lagoon, an 18-acre saltwater tidal lagoon in East Long Beach, was historically part of the Los Cerritos Wetlands and previously connected naturally to what is now Marine Stadium.

According to a statement by the City, the final phase of construction commenced in late November 2022.

The meeting on Dec. 13 will cover significant project updates, including the current construction schedule, shoring installation, bridge construction and demolition work. Community members will have an opportunity to ask questions and offer feedback at the conclusion of the presentation.

The City’s aspirations for the project include the creation of new coastal habitats and tidal wetlands, improved water quality in the lagoon through enhanced tidal exchange and the preservation and enhancement of recreational uses in Marina Vista Park and the Lagoon.

Previous enhancements to the lagoon have included dredging contaminated sediments, significant water quality improvements, establishment of new subtidal, eelgrass, and upland habitats, public access improvements, expansion of a pedestrian bridge and enhancements to the reclaimed water irrigation system.

The meeting will take place on Zoom on Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 5:30 p.m. Registration is required at bit.ly/clbcolorado. Requests for interpretation services should be submitted by Dec. 8, 2023, and can be sent to contactlbpw@longbeach.gov.
