Shannon Cholakian and Keun Ah (Nari) Ryu will speak during the AAUW meeting Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Old Ranch Country Club, 3901 Lampson Ave., in Seal Beach, about the impact of AAUW mentoring and financial support on achieving their goals.
Cholakian attended Tech Trek camp while in middle school, returned as a peer counselor and served as a dorm mom last summer at the San Diego camp and one of the Santa Barbara camps. Tech Trek is a special program of AAUW that sends middle school-aged girls to spend one week on a university campus to encourage them to attend college. Cholakian is a fourth-year human development major at California State University Long Beach (CSULB). She is secretary of the Student Government’s President Cabinet and a third-year resident assistant who is developing CSULB’s first AAUW student affiliate branch, according to AAUW.
She is a member of the AAUW National Student Advisory Council, which is composed of 10 college women from throughout the United States who demonstrate exceptional leadership, according to AAUW. The program provides an opportunity for students to actively participate in women’s advocacy, sharpen their leadership skills and take action for women’s equality on their campuses.
Keun Ah (Nari) Ryu is an international fellowship recipient from South Korea. Her fellowship is partially funded by interest from the Long Beach branch Anna Stofflet Townsend International Endowment. Nari is working toward a Ph.D. in chemistry at the University California, Irvine. She works on modifying small molecules to control the activation of immune cells to better understand how immune stimulants, like vaccines, activate immune systems.
A continental breakfast will start at 9am, followed by the program at 10am and a business meeting at 11am. Cost of the breakfast is $23.
