After nationwide search, LBCCD Board selects Mike Muñoz as new superintendent-president

After being unanimously selected by the Long Beach Community College District (LBCCD) Board of Trustees, former LBCC Vice President of Student Services Mike Muñoz will begin his new role as superintendent-president on Jan. 1, 2022.

Prior to working at LBCC, he spent more than a decade in different positions at Rio Hondo College.

The LBCCD Board of Trustees will formally vote on Muñoz’s contract during a meeting on Dec. 15.

“After conducting a comprehensive nationwide search, we are confident that the best person to lead Long Beach City College is one of our own,” said Uduak-Joe Ntuk, LBCCD Board of Trustees President. 

The search committee for the superintendent consisted of 18 people, including faculty, staff, student and community representatives. The committee recommended three final candidates to the board of trustees, one of which withdrew their application. 

Muñoz has been the interim superintendent-president since March 2021, and was permanently appointed to the position during a special closed session, according to a Dec. 10 press release.

“Serving as the new Superintendent-President of Long Beach City College is an honor of a lifetime,” Muñoz said. “LBCC is an amazing community college with the most passionate employees I’ve met in my career.” 

Muñoz has previously worked as LBCC’s vice president of student services, Prior to LBCC, he spent more than a decade in different positions at Rio Hondo College.

“We’ve seen significant improvements as we focus on advancing racial equity on campus and better serving our students from historically underserved communities,” Muñoz said. “I’m so proud to be chosen for this role and I look forward to continuing to help our students achieve their educational goals.”
