Applications for Port of Long Beach high school scholarships open Jan. 3

The Port of Long Beach will open applications for its annual high school scholarship on Jan. 3, 2022.

All completed applications must be turned in by Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at 11:59 p.m.

The scholarship is for Long Beach high school seniors who want to pursue a career in goods movement, international trade or other port-related industries.

“It is the Port’s goal to provide financial assistance to deserving students and to support them in their quest to become successful professionals and future leaders,” the Port’s website says.

Recipients of the scholarship will be given anywhere between $500 and $5,000.

According the the port’s website, applicants are required to have the following qualifications:

  • Be a senior at a public or private high school within the Long Beach Unified School District’s service area.
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 2.5.
  • Enroll part-time or full-time at an accredited college, university, community/junior college or vocational/technical program in the fall of 2022.
  • Plan to major in a field related to international trade, goods movement or other port-related industries. These industries include, but may not be limited to, international business, maritime law, global logistics, engineering, environmental science, security or a trade program that includes HVAC, welding, clean trucks/alternative fuels, or electrical.

Students must also submit the following documents along with their application:

  • An unofficial copy of high school transcripts with official grade point average.
  • A two-page essay
  • Additional documentation that students feel are appropriate, limit of 5 attachments total. (Resume, letter of recommendations, etc.)

Applications do not have to be completed all at once. There will be a “Save and Continue Later” link at the bottom of the online form, which will send a link to students with their saved progress.

It is important for applicants to inform the Port of Long Beach of any changes to their address, financial and academic status after they apply.

According to the port’s website, scholarships will be awarded based on each student’s academic ability, potential, professional interest, financial need, character, dedication to the Long Beach community and commitment to international trade and/or the port industry.

Those who are awarded the scholarship will be notified in April or May 2022.
