HOW “GREEN” IS YOUR GARDEN?
The Water Replenishment District of Southern California (WRD) will provide a free Eco-Gardener class each month through December. The next class, “Irrigation Basics for Homeowners,” will be Saturday, Sept. 19 from 9am to noon. CLEANING CALIFORNIA’S COAST
In addition to the regular door prize opportunities, such as tickets to the Aquarium, and refreshments provided by Duthie Power Services, volunteers at this Saturday’s “30-Minute Beach Cleanup” will receive (while supplies last) coupons for appetizers from Bubba Gump’s Shrimp Co. at The Pike and coupons for coffee drinks from It’s a Grind, Belmont Shore. This month’s cleanup, hosted by Justin Rudd’s Community Action Team (CAT), will be part of California Coastal Cleanup Day and will begin at 10am at 1 Granada Ave. in Belmont Shore. Scrabble enthusiasts ages 13 and up are invited to play in Scrabble Scramble Tournament 2009 Friday, Sept. 25 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 607 E. 3rd St. Doors open to the public at 6pm for those pre-registered. Purchase light refreshments, bid on silent auction and view opportunity drawing items. Scrabble competition begins at 7pm. Winning individual and team prizes will be awarded. The tournament will benefit Rising TIDE at Marguerite Kiefer Education Center, a nonprofit after-school, drop-in program which provides academic support, mentoring, cultural enrichment, arts, sports and recreation for more than 200 youth year round. Registration donation is $25. Teams of four are encouraged to register under themed names (school, church, etc.) and challenge rival teams. Individuals without team partners will be placed on a team and may register to play on multiple teams for an additional charge. Participation limited to first 100 registered players. EDUCATION INFORMATION
The Long Beach League of Women Voters will sponsor a panel discussion on Saturday, Sept. 26 presenting the arguments for and against the LBUSD parcel tax measure on the November 3 ballot. Panelists will provide a balanced look at the measure, which calls for a temporary education parcel tax of $92 per year for five years to support a variety of education programs for the Long Beach Unified School District. GET STITCHING!
Long Beach Heritage is offering an affordable embroidery class for anyone who wants an introduction to embroidery or to refresh and improve their current skills. Each participant will create an embroidered Victorian bell pull with stitches used based on ability. The classes will be taught by Elena Levine, the author of two textbooks on embroidery and clothing embellishment. There will be six Saturday classes from 1pm to 3pm, Oct. 3—Nov. 7 at the historic Bembridge House, 953 Park Circle (at 10th Street in Drake Park). Cost is $30 for all six sessions. MOTOR ON OVER
Los Altos United Methodist Church, 5950 E. Willow Street, will host its third vintage car show on Sunday, Oct. 4. Viewing time for the public will be from 9:30am to 2pm. The public can view a range of cars in the large church parking lot at the corner of Woodruff Avenue and Willow Street. Admission is free. Job’s Daughters # 161, Long Beach, a Masonic youth organization for girls aged nine to 19, will host their annual spaghetti dinner & silent auction on Saturday, Oct. 10.
